When I was out this morning for an early beach wander, I saw a very impressive Fata Morgana “A what ...”, I hear you say …!!!
With thanks to the inter-web, here is the definition of a Fata Morgana ~
A Fata Morgana
is a mirage type, specifically a superior mirage, which happens when the object
or image (mirage) is seen located above the real object.
The Fata
Morgana mirage can be seen on land and sea, although it’s mostly associated
with the open ocean. It takes its name from the sorceress Morgan le Fay, an
Arthurian legend who apparently used these illusions to lure sailors into
traps.
One of the most
remarkable things about the Fata Morgana is that it can cause a lot of unusual
sightings for everyone, such as a mountain located in the middle of the ocean.
It occurs when light rays pass through air layers with different temperatures and bend, causing a thermal inversion inside an atmospheric duct, which acts as a refracting lens. It can produce erect and inverted images, giving off the ‘Fata Morgana’ effect.
I have seen them before, but never as good as it was this morning.
