The Fence

With the tide approaching its peak, the sun bright and low it was another great afternoon wander on Crescent Beach.

I have now probably walked this beach dozens of times but never really paid too much attention to the fence. From what I have read the fence dates back to the 1930’s and is situated between the beach and the dunes. The dunes themselves rise from a height of 6’ at the west end to 22’ at the east. The fence was initially built to protect the dunes and the sand bar (or shoal) which connects the LaHave Islands to the mainland. In later years large boulders were added as further protection after the paved road was constructed on the backshore.
